Funerals

Today, I had the privilege to go to a funeral alongside my husband as he officiated a service for the husband of one of our parishioners. I believe he passed at the age of 92. It was a beautiful ceremony to be a part of. The ceremony didn’t include anything out of the ordinary. It was a very ordinary funeral service. There were a few things that really stuck out to me about today’s experience.

Grief and losing someone is hard no matter how old the person was. When the person was young, we think about how much life they still had left to live. And when they’re old, we think about the deep sorrow the people are feeling who had this person in their life for such a long time. When they’re young, you spend a lot of time thinking about what life could’ve been like for them if they stayed on earth a little while longer. When they’re old, you think about the legacy they left behind and potentially how many lives were touched.

Through this journey, I saw people who weren’t believers being drawn in because of the comfort of the Holy Spirit. I saw the glimmer of hope in their eyes when we talked of the hope of Jesus.

One particular moment that stuck out to me the most was when a little boy around the age of 8 years old approached my husband and asked him a question. He said, “Excuse me, Pastor Doug. Can I have a free Bible, or no?”

Imagine the boldness this little boy had to approach a man he had never met. This was a sure sign to me that the Holy Spirit was at work today in that funeral service. Jesus was calling a child unto Him.

My husband quickly responded with, “Of course!”, not even knowing if we had any Bibles in the church that could be given. There was no way he could let a curious child walk away without a Bible.
